The Sword and the Statue of Liberty

Karl Rossmann is adopted by a fabulously wealthy uncle who he never knew he had. The uncle is very much one of these domineering father figures. Karl doesn't really understand what the uncle wants and that's going to become important later in the novel. There are lots of things which are lovely about this chapter. I think it has some of the most beautiful writing in the book, also great like technological inventiveness.
