I was struck reading at this time by how strong the anti-religion strand is in this book, in both of them, but especially in Danoon. It goes back to his mother, it recurs in his own experience in the desert and he's sort of not able to grapple with it in an adult way. And so in some sense his own, I mean she has this line about how you know she couldn't have married a Catholic unless he was presented to me in the costume of someone else, a rational person.
