Black people are nine times more likely to be diagnosed with schizophrenia in Britain than other groups. In lots of African and Caribbean cultures, things that will be called symptoms of schizophrenia may actually be spiritual or have unique religious meanings. So I think when we look at the disproportionate diagnosis of schizophrenia in black people, we shouldn't again take that at face value - there are many different reasons why this is.
