The History of the Empire
The Horns-Ollens were at the forefront of fostering a separate sense of loyalty among their subjects. Identity in the empire was always multi-layered, matching the corporate character of society. The German National Association's largely post-date the empire when its history was reduced to that of medieval and early modern Germany. It worked because localities could generally seek redress from higher authorities over the heads of more immediate lords.
