Introduction

Sir Edward Cook was a 16th, 17th century lawyer and politician. He led the prosecution in the trials of Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators of the gunpowder plot. Later, he defended the supremacy of the common law against the Stuart claims of royal prerogative. In his public life he's one of the greatest statesmen of our country.
