In the early 1980s, Intel faced a crisis of profitability because they'd been built around memory chips. They pivoted under their CEO Andy Grove to abandon that business and embrace a new technology called the microprocessor. But it's a story of rise and fall for Intel, because after Andy Grove left the scene, he retired and then later passed away. His successors failed to keep up with new trends in the tech industry. Today Intel produces hardly any chips that go into smartphones and also were really behind the curve when it comes to semiconductors you need for AI applications.
