Zola has some of the most stunning moments of psychological intuition that have ever been put to the page. He writes about this sort of moral vacuity of materialism and that is like a theme that is painfully topical at the moment. I just feel when I read Zola that I'm reading somebody who could be writing about black characters in Thrapbo Alabama as well as you know white characters in Sacramento.
