Religion in Mesopotamia
In the religious systems of mesopotamia, gods and cities had an intimate and interwoven relationship. Each city also had a god, in the same way that every sports team has a mascot. The more a city succeeded, the more power its god was presumed to have. As the city of ashur grew in importance, its people named the city's god after the city itself. And so the god ashur was born. Grand temples were thrown up to this new deity. Worship of ashur rose to become the highest form of religion for its people. This god rapidly took on new symbols and ichonography.
