You can predict most of the gap in post-secondary education by what's happening in K12. Girls are about three quarters of a grade level ahead in English and are dead heat in math. In the 1960s, when very few girls were going to go on to college, they were still doing slightly better than boys at high school. The women's movement took away the artificial ceilings that there were on girls' educational outcomes.
