The original Celtic language of continental Europe became extinct by about 600 AD and no one really knows why it disappeared so completely. The Romans liked to think of the Celts as mud-smeared hooligans who were a threat to the Roman Empire. When they conquered large parts of Western Europe, their aim was not to spread civilisation but to create a safe buffer zone between them and Rome.
