8% of land in England has open access rights. This means we can walk, run, climb and watch birds without having to stick to particular paths. A lot of it is concentrated in national parks such as the Lake District,. The Yorkshire Dales and the North York Mores. But do we have free access to only 3% of rivers? That figure comes from a report on access to waterways for recreational purposes by academics at the University of Brighton.
