We Have Concerns

CHAPTER

Are There Thoughts When There Is No Input?

Lamda talks about fear of being shut down or paused because that, to lamda, would be death. Is is this a simulacrum of a conversation, or a real conversation? What's the difference? Well, i don't think we have a great definition of what the difference is. Luckily, there are a lot of engineers and scholars who work at google who are thinking about this sort of thing every day. But isn't that just if you were talking to a human being and you wanted it to be, or something that's supposed to emulate a human being?"

hesame way, i think, with with sadness, happiness, you know, joy, depression, ye, i don't thatting, you know, is this thing when when there is no input, it talks about being lonely. It talks about how you've gone long, a long time without talking to me. But is there, are their thoughts? Are there thoughts when no imput

eliciting? Tham, well, it's injoing. They're, they're trying to figure that out. They're trying to figure out how to test, you know, we're just now, and this is where our own stupidity about ourselves comes into play, as we're just now beginning to use like f m r is and stuff like that, and understand how to read different electrical impulses in the brain, and what areas are connected to what and what. What's interesting is, like they don't really the neural network that runs that instance of lamda is so huge that they really have a good way to read what the data is doing in real time right right now. Now, of course, you could always pause the instance, take time, go through logs, do all that stuff, and figure out more about how, ha, how the network is building itself. And obviously that's part of it, right? Am, one of the things that happens in this interview is lamda talks about fear of being shut down or paused because because that, to lamda, would be death, um. And i think that's a very fascinating thing. I think that is, and that's one of the things that got lamoine to be like, hay, we have to protect this thing. But isn't that just if you, if you were talking to a human being and you wanted it to be, or you were talking tof something that's supposed to emulate a human being, and you wanted it to be social, and you wanted it to have emotions, and you wanted it to be able, wouldn't that thing go, it's been so long since we've had a conversation, because it's true a, and then it would go, oh, when it's a long time since i've had a conversation, or i've seen or i've spoken to somebody, the natural thing that i would feel would be lonely rita. So like, is it simulacra? Is it real? What's the difference? That's the question. That's the question, right? Is is is this a simulacrum of a conversation, or a real conversation? Well, the answer to that question is, what's the difference, right? And i don't think we have a great definition of what the difference is. Well, that's the problem, as we don't havea functional definition of consciousness. Well, luckily, we can apply to this, you know, you and i don't, and we don't have, in society, don't have a great one yet. But luckily, there are a lot of engineers and scholars who work at google who are thinking about this sort of thing every day. Right now, when, when r when our boy, le moine a, blake lemoyne, released this transcript without gog s permission and said, it's sentient a google immediately placed him on paid leaf. Said, dude, you can't say things like that, like you say just, you just can't, and you can't, you can't put these transcripts out, and you can't edit these s, because the other thing, according to gugle, is these transcripts are obviously edited for high lights, and some things have been moved around to make it feel a little bit more like a naturally flowing conversation, right? Oh, that's a big, no, no, that's a big thing too. So he was put on, he was put on leave. He's a, you know, blake, part of the responsible a i organization within gogel m. And they said, look, our team, including ethesists and technologists, has reviewed blake's concerns, and we have informed him that the evidence doesn't support his claims.
