Doing the Heavy Lifting
Lifting is the action of picking something up, elevating something. To do the heavy lifting would mean that you are lifting up the heavy part of something. If it is the most difficult part of a task, you are doing the heavy lifting. I tried to look into the origin of this expression, but I think there was nothing I could really find. So we're probably going to go through a little literal and figurative example here. Let's go through three examples of how I would use the expression in everyday English.
