According to relativity, objects can't move through space faster than light. But in inflation, space itself expanded much, much faster than the speed of light. If you had two points in space that were separated by the diameter of an atom or something, they would be totally separate and different universes for all intents and purposes. This could go back to Einstein's notion of a cosmological constant.
