The meeting spot was about seven miles to the east of york, at a crossing called stamford bridge. The norse fleet had been stationed a good deal farther away than that. In all, hedrad and his men were probably planning on marching about 15 miles in order to get to this meeting. Not exactly something you want to do on an empty stomach.
