James K. A. Smith is professor of philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In his new book How To Inhabit Time he analyzes Christianity's backward looking approach to the past and future. He says nostalgia is such a dangerous idolatry class that religious communities are particularly prone to it. The entire ideology of so-called making America great again as if it was a recovery of the time is an active forgetting of how terrible those times were for many.
