Zimmerman was detained by customs agents at Dulles Airport after returning from a trip to Hungary in Romania. His clash with the feds became one of the defining skirmishes in the crypto wars of the early 1990s. PGP was later codified into a new standard known as Open PGP, overseen by a working task force. It remains the most popular method of encrypting email.
