The Effects of Altitude Sickness on the Brain

Scientists aren't exactly sure about mechanisms for these low-grade symptoms, it seems to have something to do with brain swelling. Most people think your body reacts to altitude by creating more red blood cells, but it takes almost a month to see much change. Your lungs also change their function in really interesting ways, shutting off parts of themselves that aren't working properly so the lung is more efficient overall.
