The Discipline of Silence
St. James writes about the discipline of silence in chapter three of his letter. The tongue is a fire representing in our body the whole wicked world, he says. It can pollute our whole being and its flames are fed by hell. So that is a discipline, a discipline of silence, self-restraint, self-control. And if you've been on silent retreats before, you'll know what that means. If you haven't, you'll discover it very quickly.
