The Anarchist's View of the State
Spooner never described himself as a volunteerist. I don't believe he ever described himself as an anarchist either. The position that he puts forward in this essay is... He clearly puts him in the realm of what we'd now describe in philosophy as philosophical anarchism. But you can do that without denying that the state should exist, right? So yeah, the state can exist, but it can exist just as a sort of private club.
