Questions of blame are really important to us when things get scary. Seemingly random horrors and tragedies are terrifying. Victim blaming, or even perpetrator blaming, is a comfort because it's a way of feeling in control of an uncontrollable situation. And that's exactly what happened with my best friends death. He was killed under a dangerous condition that was disregarded because the person who killed him was drunk. We sent that person to prison, and we did nothing else.
