Political violence, both small scale and large scale, has been a hugely important part of the shaping of the United States. The Ku Klux Klan helped build cross-class coalitions among white men in Reconstruction South. "I think Americans would do well to recognize the extent to which violence has consistently played that part in our history," he says.
