I Was a Good Friend of Isaiah Berlin

i was a good friend of isaiah berlin, but i don't want to pass myself off as a uniquely close friend. There are many reasons why our friendship was good, but not terribly close. None of them have to do with the affection in which he and i held each other. The need to be liked would often lead him to tell different persons that they were his favourite candidate for some post or other. He very much needed not to be liked, but to be thought well of. I said he was wonderful, and he was. But he was not perfect. None of us is. So please make him very welcome.
