A great negotiator can build a relationship with the person you're negotiating with. You don't want to, whether you call it burn a bridge or ruin relationships by being shrewd and doing something that could potentially make them look bad. There are certainly limits on both depending upon what your objectives are. If you don't care about the relationship, by all means compete. But some relationships are so important that competition would be foolish.
