"I'm half indian, a half brother, stepmother. None of those terms were ever used in our household," she says. "When you're a tean ager, especially like middle school er, i wanted nothing more than to just blend in and disappear,. right? I didn't want anyone's attention." Her kids are the only black people that walk into restaurants with their mother or father. The family has made humor out of it sometimes but they still feel uncomfortable.
