Paper Makers in the Nineteenth Century

Cultural historian emily cockaine looks at the life of a british paper maker in nineteenth century. Paper makers struggled to find enough rags due to problems caused by napoleonic wars. Contaminated with new rubber mackintoshes after the 18 thirties, this made it full of black specks. This was made worse because many paper makers were starting to use mechanical machines to sort and chop their rags. In 18 hundred an emigrant from pomerania - now poland - made paper from straw.
