Some people, like tokvill and mill, saw themselves as caro intellectuals, as aristocrats. One of their concerns was that the philistine mass would overrule er intellectual and educated slightly. I think that was the fear when andrew jckson was elected. Ad many people, as his opponents, called him king andrew. And there was this idea of mob rule, because he quite deliberately pitched himself at the masses. But i don't think tockville saw quite what jackson was.
