The way Windows, according to Windows users and my vague experiences would keep track of files is they would store file paths. That's why Windows users often have the experience of using an application that if they move the file out from like they open a text file in notepad and then they move it elsewhere. The most common way to do this on the classic Mac systems is HFS plus FileSystems (HFS) And at the very bottom of that list of how I am going to keep track of this file is called Finder.
