The Importance of Free Expression in a Liberal Democracy
The Supreme Court has expanded the scope of what's protected to include expression. The idea that Mr. Johnson, who was prosecuted for burning a flag in Texas, had simply written out his contempt or whatever motivated him to burn that flag would have been fine. But using the arguably far more powerful avenue or mechanism of burning a flag express his feelings I think is quite surprising. And we don't let the government pick and choose what forms of expression it will allow,. which ones it will not Based on their content or based on the attitude that that expression takes towards government.
