In 1941, Lindbergh really stepped up his activism for America. One poll showed 26% of Americans wanted to see him given some high government office. The president himself soon became convinced that Lindbergh was a fascist with dictatorial designs. In late May he packed Madison Square Garden with more than 20,000 people.
