In some ways, the results of this study were surprising to me because I've been in households where the television is always on or at airports. What do you think is the difference between our visual and our auditory systems that allows us to seamlessly both listen in and ignore auditory noise but not visual noise? I guess that it has to do with the startle response. A sudden loud noise will capture your auditory attention too. If you're listening to NPR and suddenly there's an explosion on the NPR, even if you thought you weren't listening, that'll grab your attention through the well-known treestman-attentional filter.
