How Did You Respond to a Black Student Saying, This Is Just the Way Things Are Here?

There was a drive by shooting in which one of our students was killed. And i remember talking to one of my students in them saying, you know, mister smith, this is just how it is here. Like this is just what black people do. How did you respond in that moment? I don't think i responded in in the way that i would have wanted to. In that moment, i think i just said,  it's time to get to class because the bell was ringing. and i wish now that i had spent more time, that i had said, it's ok for me to be a few minutes late to class.
