The Secret Schools of Afghanistan
In October 2001, everything changed. US and allied forces invaded Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9-11 attacks. Taliban fighters appear to be making a hasty retreat. Several al-Qaeda camps have been devastated by it. Now that the Taliban have been toppled, normal state-run schools reopened. Millions upon millions of Afghan women and girls were once again free to access formal education. This time around, girls are allowed to attend primary schools. But secondary schools, colleges and universities are off limits to all young Afghan woman and girls. In defiance of the ban, secret schools have again started to appear across Afghanistan. Hidden in plain sight.
