In 55 b c, caesar decides to invade britain. His stated reason for doing it was that there were some gauls who had rebelled and then retreated across the english channel in order to escape punishment. The romans really hated these scary germanic barbarians so the fact that he took the fight to the other side of the rhine really plays well back home. Even if he didn't conquer anything, going to britain would give him a big boost back in rome, just for being there and exploring.
