The Secret Police of Sparta

Some ancient Greek city states, including Athens had what you might call a proto police force. This force was geared towards protecting markets and keeping an eye on untrustworthy foreigners. The secret police of Sparta existed for one purpose and one purpose only. And it was to clamp down on any hint of rebellion from the vast majority of the nation's populace.
