The Different Levels of Going for Refuge
Sangha Ratchetta defines four levels of going for refuge. One is the cultural level where one does Buddhist things but they have no real spiritual significance or no real impact. These can be and I stress can be only cultural aspects of going for Refuge. They are established norms of what we do. But gathering a bunch of people who call themselves Buddhist doesn't make it a sangha. Even doing Buddhist things like meditating, bowing, studying, meeting for dinner at a local vegan restaurant doesn't make you more or less Buddhist. So our order expresses this kind of ringing in a vast array of different notes - all generally in the same key.
