The historian Carolyn Merrill has pointed out that the archival record very clearly shows thatMarie Laveau did not free any of the people she owned as slaves. It would be more neat and tidy if Marie Laveaux had also been an active member of the Underground Railroad but human beings often aren't that neat and tidy.
