Taylor Hirsch of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and Colleagues says sperm whales produce certain patterns of cliques. The codas may serve as symbolic markers consistent with a culture among the whales, authors say. "Culture comes down to this idea of the way that we do things," Hirsch says.
