There was a belief that if we could just somehow marginalize over those, that we would find the fixed truth. And so you get Goulton who's trying to understand how all these variables are related to each other. If you have an exceedingly tall father, you tend to have a shorter son. Yet on average, taller fathers tend to have taller sons and vice versa. That notion that there are maybe two components that are working here.
