i'm going to throw some massive shade at altaser right now. He tries to get away from the bas in superstructure model, and i just don't think he's successful. Most people have lots of incoate ideas because their job isn't to sit around making them systematic like a professional philosopher. Altiser doesn't actually know anything about economics or what actually happens. Ideology is glue that kind of holds the social system together. And for that reason, i think the only relationship that altiser is ever actually able to articulate between the ideology and the base is a functionalist one - it's an idealist account of ideology.
