The Importance of Assets in the Global Economy
The net international investment position (NIP) is a measure of how many foreign assets you own. In 2008, the NIP peaks at about 30% of GDP - now it's closer to 80%. The value of all those assets just tanks, equities fall,. I think the S&P falls something like 60%, or perhaps 40%. They've been sending goods to the US and the US hasn't been sending as many goods back.
