The Aryan Castes
There is an actual idea that one's place in the social order is a function of one's spiritual condition. The caste avoidances are not simply socially based, they are deeply religiously based and are part and parcel of the whole religious system. These people can't even touch the wells of upper caste communities. In some cases we have to wear a spitoon so that their saliva would not touch the earth and contaminate it.
