The Origins of the Deck Chair

John Cham of Boston, Massachusetts took out a patent in 1855. This was for a folding chair, though it didn't yet include the canvas seat. Over three decades later, an Englishman also obtained a patent for foldable and portable chairs. John Thomas Moore manufactured these chairs at his factory in Mackelsville. There's some debate as to who invented the modern deck chair.
