Predestination and Free Will in Relationship to Free Will

i'm going to talk about predestination and free will from a catholic perspective. What do i mean by predestination? Therere various ways you might see it defined. I think the central on of the doctrine of predestination is that not just the possibility of attaining salvation, but of person's actually attaining salvation is god's gift. So this is not just something of purely sort of metaphysical interest, though i'm interested in the metaphysics of it, but it's something that has serious implications, practically for our spiritual life.
