Are Babies Reliant on Caregivers?

Human infants, unlike a lot of other animals, are completely reliant on their caregivers. They might emit social signals like crying or smiling in order to try to change their environment and get the kinds of things that they need. And so I think babies are born with this need for social partners, and then have to figure out which ones are the relevant social partners.
