The Cost of Grandstanding and Posturing in the Government

The government seems to have come unmoored from the constitution doing things that a reasonable person would clearly see contradicts the plain language of the constitution. I ran across an article talking about Madison and factions, which brought to my mind a question that has long plagued me. Despite what we learned in high school about the checks and balances that are built into the government, is it possible that you can get a majority of people to basically co-opt all three branches of government such that the government now starts acting contrary to what the constitution says? It seems reasonable that that could happen. If you compare what our government has been doing to what the Constitution says, it's allowed to do.
