The Permafrost Carbon Storage
In the northern circumpolar permafrost region, there is somewhere between 1400 and 1600 gigatons of organic carbon. That's about three times as much as all living vegetation on planet Earth. Some of that will already be in the active layer that we talked about earlier this year,. But there's also additional pools of carbon that we haven't been able to quantify. Another really deep deposits might contain as much as another thousand petograms.
