What Is the Paradox of Slavery?

The institution of slavery is incompatible with republican freedom. The way to overcome the paradox of slavery is not to embrace slavery, but to actually overthrow it. And this is originally expressed in a kind of independent proprietor ideal. This is anstill an abolitionist and anti colonial view. It sometimes is committed to colonial expansion, but it's abolitionist andAnti colonial because they saw the massive latifundias of the slave owners as threats to everybody's independents. What they wanted was just existing property redistributed to everybody on an equal basis, regardless of race,. so that they could be independent. That sort of radical form, emancipatory form, that this movement takes prior to the civil war.
