The model for a long time in which load balancers just pointed at hosts and the host did the rest of the routing was inefficient. What people really wanted is I want to have my load balancer be aware of my container IP addresses and then send them traffic directly. And that was basically the birth of ingress controllers. So just give me a controller that's watching the state of the container infrastructure and then managing the load balancer for me.
