Joseph: People use the word self to mean very different things in different schools of psychology. So, for instance, when you were talking about the self emerging in the child, you're really talking about the ego. And that's the key differentiation, which is self with a small s of the ability to say I or little kids say me want water versus the capital s self, which is the numbness, the center of the personality. Some people really look at individuation as a lifetime process and they see its roots in childhood.
